Description
Ilyoplax deschampsi, commonly known as the Mini Chili Crab, is a diminutive species of mud crab belonging to the family Ocypodidae. Native to East Asia, it is found along the coasts of Japan, South Korea, and China, particularly in Jiangsu, Shandong, the Bohai Sea, and the Liaodong Peninsula. These crabs inhabit brackish tidal zones, residing in burrows along river mouths and estuaries. They are adapted to live in groups and can coexist with small fish and shrimp.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Adults reach approximately 1.1 inches (2 cm) in length.
Coloration: Typically brown with a reddish hue, resembling chili peppers, which is how they earned their common name.
Behavior: They are burrowers and exhibit nocturnal activity patterns.
Care in Aquariums:
The Mini Chili Crab is becoming increasingly popular among aquarium enthusiasts due to its small size and engaging behaviors. Here’s how to care for them:
Tank Size: A minimum of 5 gallons is recommended for a group of 5–6 crabs.
Water Parameters:
pH: 6.0–7.5
Temperature: 20–32°C (68–90°F)
Salinity: Slightly brackish (specific gravity 1.005–1.010)
Substrate: Fine sand or gravel to facilitate burrowing.
Diet: Omnivorous; feed with algae wafers, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms.
Tankmates: Peaceful species such as small fish or snails are suitable companions. Avoid aggressive or larger fish that may prey on the crabs.
Regular water changes (25% weekly) and the provision of hiding spots like rocks, caves, or driftwood are essential for their well-being .
