Description

The Red Devil Vampire Crab (Geosesarma hagen) is a small, very colorful, semi-terrestrial species that is native to Java, Indonesia. It inhabits forest areas near streams, rivers, and ponds. It spends most of its time on land, but also often submerges in freshwater, including when it molts. It is communal with its own species, and males typically are larger than females, and also have much larger claws.

Appearance:

• Carapace: Dark brown to black on the front half, transitioning to bright orange or red on the rear half; coloration intensity varies among individuals, with some nearly entirely orange.

• Claws: Bright orange to red, standing out vividly against darker legs and body.

• Eyes: Prominent bright yellow (sometimes off-white in captive-bred specimens).

• Size: Carapace width ~1.1–1.4 cm; full leg span ~6–7 cm (2–3 inches).
