Description

Gecarcoidea humei (Wood-Mason, 1874) is a terrestrial land crab belonging to the family Gecarcinidae. Once thought to be a synonym of G. lalandii, this species was recognized as distinct only in 2017 based on molecular and morphological evidence.

It inhabits the eastern Indian Ocean, particularly the Nicobar Islands, with no overlapping range with G. lalandii, which is found more broadly across Southeast Asia and the West Pacific. Interestingly, Christmas Island is a unique location where G. humei coexists with both G. lalandii and G. natalis.
