Description

The Butterfly Crab (Neilupotamon sinense) is a striking freshwater species named for the butterfly-shaped markings on its carapace. Native to the mountain streams of Guizhou and Guangxi in China, adults reach 4–6 cm in body length and display a dazzling array of red, orange, blue and other vivid hues. They inhabit sandy-gravel substrates, often sheltering beneath stones, and are omnivorous with a slight preference for meaty foods. Although gentle in temperament, they require stable water conditions to thrive. Thanks to their brilliant coloration and moderate care requirements, Butterfly Crabs are becoming increasingly popular among aquarium enthusiasts.
